An introduction to our Paint Protection Services

Hello, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Mike Burke, and I’m the owner of Sun Stoppers. Most people in Charlotte know Sun Stoppers for our 9 automotive window tinting shops and 3 residential/ commercial flat glass divisions, however we also provide paint protection services at 4 of our locations. I started installing paint protection film and clear bras back in 2001, but stopped offering it after a year or so as I wasn’t happy with the quality of the products that were available at the time. I started again in 2006 when better quality films became available, and since then I have added several skilled installers to my team.

Rob Ruska, who runs my Lake Norman store, Jason Donaldson in Matthews, and Charles Marshall in Concord have all been doing paint protection alongside window tinting since the mid-2000s, and Gordon Stegall, who runs my Uptown location at the intersection of Monroe Rd and Wendover has been my primary paint protection specialist, installing PPF full-time since around 2011. Among the five of us, we install PPF on an average of 50-60 cars a month. We’ve seen and done it all and when you come to us we can educate you on all of your options. Whether it is a simple front bumper and mirror guards to protect your nice SUV against rocks and bugs on the highway; a full body paint correction, wrap and ceramic coating on your exotic car; or anything in-between, we will answer any questions you may have and help you decide on the level of protection that’s right for you. We even offer loaner cars at all our PPF locations so that your daily schedule is impacted as little as possible while we are working on your vehicle.

We have installed films from all the major manufacturers – I was an authorized 3M dealer for many years and later switched primarily to SunTek for their superior products and price point. However, in the past year we have made another switch to offering exclusively XPEL paint protection film. We made this move because based on our extensive experience and knowledge of the industry we believe that XPEL’s products are hands-down the best available today.

XPEL Ultimate Plus and XPEL Stealth are truly the best films on the market. Both provide superior protection and self-healing properties, as well as superior adhesives. XPEL Ultimate Plus has a mirror-smooth clear coat while XPEL Stealth provides all the same benefits in a satin matte finish. For more information on both films, click HERE for Ultimate Plus and HERE for Stealth.

Finally, for the truly discerning client, in order to get the absolute best out of paint protection, there are some other elements to the equation, namely paint correction and coatings. For your PPF to look its absolute best, it’s important for the vehicle’s paint to be perfect before it’s applied. Swirls, scratches, etchings, holograms etc. can all detract from the finish even when covered with clear film. Finally, for the truly discriminating client, the final step to a top-notch paint protection job is a hydrophobic coating. These coatings repel water and dirt help to keep your car looking perfect by reducing water spots, keeping road grime and dust from adhering to the vehicle, and reducing or eliminating the small amount of yellowing that can occur in the film with age and sun. There are several brands of ceramic coatings on the market, but we recommend Ceramic Pro because we believe it provides the best UV protection, oxidation and corrosion resistance, stain and scratch resistance and durability compared to any other coating on the market.

Since I started Sun Stoppers, I’ve always maintained that the company would do one thing really well rather than trying to be a do-it-all shop offering rims, stereos, accessories etc. That one thing is film application, whether it’s window tint or PPF, and in that area there is no one who can touch our level of skill, quality and customer service. In order to maintain the same high standard for paint correction and coatings, we partner with Tim Thorpe of Ceramic Pro Charlotte, the Charlotte area’s premier Ceramic Pro dealer and paint-correction specialist. Tim’s work has to be seen to be believed. Once you see the mirror finish that can be achieved with the right tools and techniques, you’ll never look at factory paint the same way again. If you’re interested in protecting your vehicle’s paint or even just learning a little more about what’s available, please give me a call at 704-858-1608. I’d love to answer any questions you may have and look forward to doing business with you.

Guinness World Record for Tinting Set

August 1st, 2018 by Emmariah Holcomb originally posted on windowfilmmag.com

Thousands of car windows are tinted every day, but have you ever stopped to think about how many windows could be tinted in an eight hour work day? That was the question that motivated XPEL and dozens of window tinters to set a record in the Guinness Book of World Records on Sunday, July 29.

It all started when Mike Burke, SunStoppers Window Tinting owner, attended XPEL’s dealer conference where a guest speaker gave insight on how he set a Guinness Book record related to shooting nerf guns. “I said we should do that for film,” Burke said, and the idea took off from there.

The next step was getting a film supplier on board and finding a location big enough to accommodate the amount of vehicles and installers. That’s when Burke contacted his longtime friend, Charlie Pierce, the owner of Town & Country Ford in Charlotte, N.C. Pierce wasn’t sold on the idea at first, but after some convincing he agreed. Then XPEL representatives and SunStoppers’ installers met there Sunday for the event.

XPEL supplied the film. “For us it’s just the kind of thing we would do. So when Mike mentioned it I thought about it for all of ten minutes and said let’s do it,” Ryan Pape, XPEL president and chief executive officer said.

Automotive Window Tinting and Lupus

I answer phones and schedule customer appointments at Sun Stoppers. One day when I was so busy I hadn’t had a chance to sit down a lady in her early forties with a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta walked into the shop. I remember her vividly, despite the craziness of the day, because she asked specifically about our clear film options. Most of our walk-in customers are not aware of the fact that we offer clear automotive window tint so I knew she must have gone online to sunstoppers.com and done her homework.

Even clear film still has a small amount of tint so I walked outside with her and held samples of all of our high-visible-light-transmission options against her car windows to help her visualize. As we walked back inside the shop she began to tell me that she suffers from lupus and overexposure to the sun leaves her dealing with unnecessary side effects of the disease. Lupus is a chronic and complex autoimmune disease that affects your joints, skin, brain, lungs, kidneys, and blood vessels. Lupus causes widespread inflammation and tissue damage in the affected organ. She explained to me that overexposure to the sun causes flare ups, skin rashes and painful sunburns. She didn’t like the look of dark-tinted windows, but needed the UV protection in her car because her 45-minute commute to and from work in the hot sun was literally causing her harm.

After weighing all her options she decided to go with XPEL Prime XR PLUS which was developed with a nano-ceramic particle formulation that provides SPF 1,000, blocking 99% of the harmful UVA and UVB rays that can lead to numerous skin cancers, premature aging, sun burns and skin cell damage. It also blocks 98% of the sun’s heat and infrared radiation, all while still allowing up to 80% of visible light to pass through.

We tinted all four windows, and both the back and front windshields of her Jetta. When we finished, she was very pleased with the outcome. She told me she felt secure now knowing that the film she chose would not only help to keep her car cooler but it would provide the vital protection she needed from the sun. I left work that day feeling satisfied and accomplished knowing that Sun Stoppers was able to provide safety and assurance to a customer who needed it the most.

Window Tint, not just about looking cool.

Think window tint is just about looking cool? Uber driver Ricky recently found out firsthand how window tint could improve not only his health and comfort, but also his bottom line.

Ricky, a Boston native, wasn’t prepared for the intense North Carolina sun after moving to Charlotte and taking up Uber driving to earn some extra cash. He thought he was protected inside his car, but as he racked up the miles behind the wheel last summer, he noticed his legs were actually getting sunburned between the bottom edge of his shorts and the shadow of his dash. Not only that, his black Nissan Altima was HOT.

“I’d have the AC cranking to keep it comfortable,” he says, “But I noticed I was getting terrible gas mileage. I finally made the connection between running the air conditioner on full blast and my fuel efficiency taking a huge hit.”

Ricky decided to do some research, and that’s when he found Sun Stoppers.

Through sheer coincidence, Ricky gave an Uber ride to Sun Stoppers owner and founder Mike Burke. While casually chatting to pass the time, Mike happened to mention the name of his company, and Ricky was unreserved with his praise: “Yeah I’ve heard of you; you guys are the best! You do the ceramic windshield tinting that nobody else can do!” As they talked, Mike told him a little more about his options for windshield tinting:

In the past, blocking more heat or damaging UV rays meant putting darker films on the windows. Ok on the sides and back of your car, but not so great for windshields where visibility is most important. With today’s cutting-edge nano-ceramic particle technology though, the top window film companies are manufacturing films that have all the performance, without the dark color being a necessity.

XPEL PRIME XR and PRIME XR PLUS block 99% percent of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays – the ones that were giving Ricky sunburned knees. Those are the same harmful rays that cause many types of skin cancer. What’s more, PRIME XR blocks over 80% of the sun’s heat and infrared radiation, and PRIME XR PLUS blocks 98%—all without sacrificing clarity, color or visible light transmission, so the film can be used on your windshield for full summer protection.

With that new information, Ricky was sold. He’s now driving around with XPEL PRIME XR premium window film on his windshield, blocking the sun’s harmful rays. He’s running his AC on low; keeping cool and keeping more of his Uber fares in his pocket.
